CCS: How to use HPSS
The HPSS storage system is available for the Center for
Computational Science users. This system provides reliable hierarchical
storage space that is automatically managed, has a large capacity, and
is easily accessible.
How do I obtain an HPSS Account?
All CCS users are automatically given an HPSS account;
the login name and password for HPSS are identical to the DFS ones used
on those systems. When you change your password in DFS, the HPSS password
will also be changed.
How do I access HPSS?
You will need to user Hierarchical Storage Interface (HSI)
to access HPSS. HSI has been ported to all CCS platforms (AIX,
IRIX, Linux, OSX and Solaris). See the HSI guide
for information on HSI and the HPSS User's
Guide for additional information about HPSS.
What is HSI?
The HSI (Hierarchical Storage
Interface) utility allows automatic authentication and provides a user-friendly
command line and interactive interface to HPSS. HSI is the preferred
method of accessing HPSS.
Features of HSI include:
- Password security - passwords are not transmitted in
clear text over the network
- Usable in pipelines and shell scripts, and in batch jobs
- Supports command stacking (multiple commands per line)
- Supports interactive or "one liner" (i.e., command line only)
modes
- Supports abbreviations for most commands and keywords
- Supports recursion for many common commands (GET, PUT,
REMOVE, LIST, etc.).
- Has extensive online fullscreen help
and MUCH MORE!
How do I use HSI?
hsi (will start hsi in interactive mode)
or
hsi [options] command(s) (will execute
all commands on the startup line, then exit)
(You may need to add /usr/local/bin
to your search path).
If you have not logged into Kerberos or DCE you will
be prompted for your username and password. See the reference manual
for command line options and other startup information.
Where can I get documentation?
See the HSI guide for information on HSI and
the HPSS
User's Guide for additional information about HPSS.
Who do I contact for help?
For help with HPSS, or to report problems, please contact the User
Services group by email to consult@ccs.ornl.gov.
