CSB Construction Update: September 9, 2002

The walls are going up (that's what that BIG crane is for). We have them "caught on tape".

CSB Construction Update: July 18, 2002

The walls of the CSB are being built onsite as tilt up panels. These panels are 50' tall by 30' wide and weigh up to 60 tons! The picture shows two panels being built. On a previously poured concrete pad, they lay a non-stick layer and a plastic grid. Brick facing is laid in the grid, then re-bar on top of that, and then concrete is poured in and leveled. When the resulting slab is lifted (by those BIG cranes currently blocking White Oak Avenue), it looks like a conventional brick wall. On the left in the photo, there is a low form with all the brick in place and the re-bar on top. The wooden squares are the forms for the window openings.

On the right in the photo, you see a taller frame, This is for two identical panels. They will pour one, let it dry, then put a "no-stick" surface down and then build another panel on top of it.

According to the construction foreman, the structural steel will start going up on Monday (July 22) and then the panels will start going up a week or two after that. They also finished pouring the computer room floor today. It is two separate layers of concrete. Each layer is about 4 inches thick. Between the layers is a heavy waterproofing mat to seal the floor from any possible leaks. Every penetration through the floor for conduit has a seal around the concrete and was inspected before the concrete was poured.
