CCS: CCS Glossary

CCS and ORNL have their own set of terminology; below are some of the acronyms we use.

ACTS The Advanced Computational Testing and Simulation project is building a set of software tools for high performance computing. This set of tools is known as the ACTS Toolkit.
ASCR Advanced Scientific Computing Research (aka OASCR). One of the five DOE Offices of Science. See the ASCR web pages
BER Biological and Environmental Research (aka OBER). One of the five DOE Offices of Science. See the BER web pages
BES Basic Energy Sciences. One of the five DOE Offices of Science. See the BES web pages
CCS Center for Computational Sciences. A national center which supports scientific computing for the the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Science (formerly Office of Energy Research). CCS is operated out of the Computer Science and Mathematics Division of Oak Ridge National Laboratory. See www.csm.ornl.gov for all CSM activities; see www.ccs.ornl.gov for pages targetted for users of the High Performance Computing Facility.
CSM Computer Science and Mathematics Division of Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Where CCS is housed. See www.csm.ornl.gov.
DCE Distributed Computing Environment used on CCS systems for user authentication.
DFS Distributed File System used with DCE on CCS systems. All user home directories are kept in DFS.
DOE U.S. Department of Energy. The friendly folks in Washington from whence cometh our funds. Office of Science home page.
EES Evaluation of Early Systems. In-depth performance testing of new or beta systems from high performance computing vendors. project description and results.
FES Fusion Energy Sciences. One of the five DOE Offices of Science. See the FES web pages
GPFS General Parallel File System is a large temporary-storage area with shared access from all SP nodes.
HENP High Energy and Nuclear Physics. One of the five DOE Offices of Science. See the HENP web pages
HSI HPSS Interface Utility, an interface to CCS's archival storage system. See the HSI manual.
HPC High Performance Computing. Generally denotes computing that approaches and/or passes the TeraFLOPS performance range.
HPSS High Performance Storage System. HPSS is CCS's archival storage system. See HPSS web page, HPSS manual.
LDRD Laboratory Directed Research and Development (aka "seed money"). Funds provided by ORNL to get projects to a "proof of principle" stage.
MPI Message Passing Interface.
MPP Massively Parallel Processor. Generally denotes a distributed memory computer with more than a "few" independent processors or nodes. At CCS, the Compaq Alphaserver SC and the IBM SP are MPP machines.
ORNL Oak Ridge National Laboratory where CCS is located. ORNL is located in Oak Ridge TN.
PI Each CCS approved project has a single Principal Investigator, or PI for short. The PI is the scientific head of the project supported by an allocation of CCS resources. Although the PI may delegate some responsibilities to account managers, he or she is ultimately responsible the accounts and usage that take place under the project allocation.
RMS Resource Management System, a set of commands for running parallel programs and monitoring their execution on Compaq AlphaServer SC.
SP The IBM SP computer (aka Eagle). Sometimes we just call it the SP for short.
X10 The ORNL reservation, (specifically the part on Bethel Valley Road). Many of the facilities in Oak Ridge TN were originally constructed during the Manhattan Project; back then everything had code names. X10 was the designation for the ORNL reservation on Bethel Valley Road.
