Accelerator Physics Simulation Benchmarking and Scaling

SNS beam transport calculations using a 3-D algorithm to account for the space charge forces are now possible, using the Eagle computer. These simulations follow the beam throughout its 1000 turn (250 km) injection cycle, and indicate the spreading of the beam, an important step in understanding how to minimize beam loss. As beam loss is expected to be the primary limitation on the ultimate SNS performance, understanding these processes is critical to providing the unprecedented beam powers SNS will ultimately deliver.
